Professional Development: You Should NEVER Stop Learning

Learning should not stop in school. Throughout life people must continue to learn new things in order to grow. Having a thirst for knowledge is healthy and beneficial to one’s well-being. One can take advantage of professional development at work or decide to study a language in their free time. Keeping the brain active is necessary in order to be successful and happy. Every experience in life teaches something. There are times people feel like they know it all and other times they feel they don’t know anything at all, such is life. With an open-mind, one can triumph over challenges by learning new things.

“All growth depends upon activity. There is no development physically or intellectually without effort, and effort means work.” – Calvin Coolidge

Happiness comes from reaching goals. When things are accomplished, a feeling of satisfaction is evident. After working hard, accomplishments are much sweeter when they are finally attained. In addition, when people focus on their personal growth, they have less stress due to lower cortisol levels in the body, increased defenses which means they are healthier, and improved sleep patterns. Personal growth leads to improved brain function and helps keep a person young. Learning new things also leads to surges of dopamine in the body. Dopamine is known as the feel-good hormone.

“You don’t learn to walk by following rules. You learn by doing, and by falling over.” – Richard Branson

Challenges help people grow. Learning something new is meant to be a challenge and is a way to gain knowledge. The more knowledge a person has, the more reason a person can use in trying situations. Being able to see things from a different perspective can create new opportunities. Reacting and adapting to new situations help people evolve and be more efficient. Being creative is about being able to use your abilities in different types of settings. People can use their creativity as a way to grow.

“Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.” – Benjamin Franklin

Learning is all about being involved. It is pretty hard to learn by just sitting on the sidelines. Being involved engages people and prevents boredom. Professional development gives the mind an opportunity to exercise. Everyone wants a sharp and healthy mind. Research shows that if your brain is working at a higher lever, learning is actually easier.

“The best part of learning is sharing what you know.” – Vaughn K. Lauer

Knowledge gives people more opportunities to be part of a team and connect with others. When you learn something new, you usually want to share it. Teaching others what you know can improve your relationships and help you be an even more integral part of the team. This also helps boost confidence in oneself. People are proud of their accomplishments and it also feels good to be sought out to help with a question or an issue.

Dr. Seuss might have said it best when he said “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” In order to get ahead and feel as if you are evolving, learning is key. Figure out what interests you and invest in yourself by taking the time to learn something new. Life is a journey of new beginnings that make use stronger and wiser. As we get older, we should get wiser!
